Montgomery Fire Department collection, 1918-1977.

This collection includes correspondence, two payroll ledgers, and photographs. The correspondence is dated between March 1928 to Dec. 1929. Many of the letters concern the operation of the Montgomery Fire Department. Included are lists of items, value and bids on material used by the department. The two ledgers date between 1918 to 1927 and record time and payroll for the fire companies. The ledgers record time and payroll for the Hook & Ladder Co., 2 steamer companies, and a company at Highland Station. Included in the photographs are portraits of personnel, fire stations, fire engines, sites of fires, community service, and fire prevention outreach. The photographs include many images of fire damage to businesses in Montgomery.

Like many fire departments in other towns and cities, the Montgomery Fire Department finds its roots in several volunteer fire companies. The first records of a fire company in Montgomery, Ala., is the Old Dexter Fire company in 1847.
